Set in the early turbulent years of the Roman Empire, and seen through the eyes of three men, Warrior Prince tells the story of a love that will not be denied, of courage in the face of adversity, of political intrigue, betrayal and death. Against this backdrop of death and mayhem, Lucius and Callistus, two estranged lovers, meet at last, but can their love overcome the enormous odds they must face when it seems that every man - and the gods - are determined to tear them apart once more?

I really wanted to like this book more. I even hesitate giving it a semi-negative review, but I really depend on the Amazon.com reviews. So, I want to be honest.

This feels like a "starter" book for a first-time novelist. The concept is great but parts of it are just implausible. Would you taken in a rebel slave from an army of savage mercenary prisoners of war and allow him to...tutor your daughter, ALONE? It happens. Lots of things like this happen. People act and make decisions with no fore thought or reasoning behind their decisions. It makes no sense. Things just seem to "happen" to further the story along. The book is short and I like stories that move...but I need some build up to certain events...some supporting information to frame the action. It doesn't happen here. There are even entire battle scenes that are encapsulated in one paragraph. I can feel the author rushing the story to get to the next sex scene. The sex is great in this book, but it needs to support the story...not replace it. I can read adult magazines for that.

Because everything is so rushed, the characters are not developed at all. It's hard to hear how these lovers long for each other but you can't really care...because you don't know who they are. All we get is how "blue" his eyes were a bunch of times. The narration slips back and forth between characters, but I had to keep flipping back to the chapter heading to see who was speaking because they all sound the same. There's no character differentiation in the way they speak or even think. Having said that....for such a small book, the author spend way too much time in his characters' thought processes. Don't TELL us. SHOW us. Show us an action that reveals what your character is thinking. Let us discover them!

I have to agree with another reviewer. The language can be way over the top and completely out of "character" for these men. Lucius sounds like one of the old Hollywood bad actress diva's in the black and white films. "Oh, Callistus, Oh my sweet one." It sounds like a woman's dialogue. It pulled me out of the moment many times.

Many of the characters have "thoughts" that are completely out of place. For instance, if an army captain is meeting his rival on the eve of battle for the first time, he wouldn't be thinking, "He had the bluest eyes I've ever seen and short, cropped flaxen hair." No kidding. It's in there. There's also a scene where Callistus picks up his wounded lover from the battlefield. Tense moment, right? The lover actually licks the nipple of Callistus in a playful way. No kidding. It's in there.

I do believe the writer has potential, but this reads like a college writing project. I'd be willing to read some of his stuff in the future...just not this one again.

This is painfully bad. All plot, no character.
I liked the story and characters, I thought the plot was interesting and fun, I thought lovemaking scenes were hot, but I could have done with less "Oh my love, will love you forever" (paraphrasing) proclamations. I love sweet romances, but this time language was way too sugary for my taste, especially for who the leads are. I just do not see them talking like that, even in Latin )
As another reviewer stated, I wanted to like this book, but was very disappointed. The plot line is much too predictable and cliche ridden. He really seems to be trying too hard to fit in as many sex scenes as possible. He should decide if he is a writer of gay fiction or gay porn. The many gross grammatical errors were distracting. He needs an editor.
Immensely enjoyable tale of Roman and "barbarian" men who fall in love and manage to keep it going in spite of separation, war and the impossible odds. Very realistic details and historical setting, I always wish this authors novels were longer because they're so well done.
This is the first J.P. Bowie novel I have read, but judging from "Warrior Prince" [MLR Press, 2009] I conclude that he is an accomplished writer. Certainly his prose is well constructed and also flows along at an easy-to-read pace. Moreover, the characters are quite well developed, and for the most part believable.

Lucius, a middle-class Roman, leads a quite comfortable life except for an unrelenting longing for his departed lover, Callistus. The latter is a former fugitive slave with Spartacus's defeated uprising, and Lucius is uncertain whether he is alive or dead.

Reminiscent of a decadent, pre-Christian Rome, a vastly wealthy merchant introduces Lucius to a handsome tribune, Flavius Sedonius, who is sexually indifferent between male and female, and after a brief affair with Lucius, Flavius mentions that he is that he is marching back to Gaul to do battle with a Prince Callistus.

Encouraged by evidence that Callistus lives, Lucius signs-up with the army in the hope of finding Callistus, but ends up in another part of Gaul, while Flavius is captured by Callistus in the other. In another twist of fate that Roman Legions free both, and Callistus is taken back to Rome to die in the arena.

I won't spoil the ending by talking about the outcome, but it does add a touch of drama to a fairly tame romance by imperial Roman standards.

Overall it is a good read with some interesting twists, some drama, and enough sex and romance to satisfy. My strongest quibble, however, is that it takes some unacceptable liberties with the period. This is particularly so regarding such anachronistic phrases as "to tie the knot," referring to a marriage, which dates from about the 13th century, A.D. Also, "he should make an honest woman of her," which the Online Etymology Dictionary dates from about the 17th century.

Having said that, I recommend Warrior Prince as a good read. Three and one-half stars.
