First in a brand new series from the author of the Rogue Mage novels
Jane Yellowrock is a supernatural skinwalker--one sharing her body with the soul of a mountain lion. When the rogue-vampire hunter is hired to hunt down a particularly nasty vamp, Jane is drawn into the steamy New Orleans vampire society where she learns the ins-and-outs of the "sane" vampire culture, more about her own Cherokee heritage, and we are drawn into a rousing, fast-paced thriller.

I loved this book. I prefer my urban fantasy to be filled with kickass female characters without making the main thrust of every chapter be about sex. The cover is my main complaint. As with so many novels, the person who wrote the book apparently had no say in the cover. Jane doesn't leave exposed skin and breasts pushed up so high that the vamps can just clamp down on a boob and suck her dry. She doesn't leave a long ponytail blowing in the wind for someone to grab. When will the person drawing the cover actually use a description of the character? If I'd seen this book in a store, I'd have walked right past it. Thankfully I saw it on Amazon where there were a lot of great reviews.
Spoiler ------
I like the way she got through the length of time this book takes place over without ever having sex. Oh sure, there's flirting and a bit more, and I bucked up and dealt with it, but no sex! Maybe one day I'll find a novel about a kickass female character who can get through whatever it is she's doing without sexual tension. Now that would be a dream come true!

Skinwalker Jane Yellowrock Book 1 (Audible Audio Edition) Faith Hunter Khristine Hvam Audible Studios Books Reviews
So this book popped up in my feed and I wasn't sure what to expect, and to be honest I still don't know how I feel really. After the first mention of "the beast" I thought, weird. After the first time the beast spoke out I thought "I can't read this, it's gonna drive me mad" and I must admit I felt that way every time the beast spoke. It just irritated the crap out of me.
I did find the story and other characters entertaining, although Jane could have been... just more.
The book was nice and long and went into good detail, which I enjoy in a book, so I'm willing to give Book 2 a go.
I enjoyed this book. Jane is a shape shifting Skinwalker and a Vampire hunter for hire. She was called to New Orleans to track and kill a rogue Vampire killing both humans and vampires.Things are different for Jane in New Orleans. She learns many things about the vampires she did not know about before. Pieces of New Orleans history decorates the story line. Jane also finds a bit more of the pieces missing in her life. The memories of her child hood are very vague. Though she shares her body with the moutain lion she turns into to hunt and look for things she can find faster as a mountain lion. She calls this the beast she shares her body with. She aware that Beast has answers to some of her questions.
later in the book you learn that she also has the ability to change into other animals, though it can be very hard for her, or difficult to change back i should say.
I enjoyed this book. It was fast moving and as soon as you think you can see the direction the Author changes it up for you.
Finding it hard to put down, I can say I can't wait to see what is ahead in the next book in this series.
This is so far superior to the usual run of girl-vamp-slayer novels that it took me completely by surprise. The characters are believable, their motivations and interactions well-thought-out; the storyline was compelling and carried me right to the end (which I was sorry to reach -- thank goodness there's a next book in the series!)... Also, as someone who's lived and worked with both cougars and bobcats (at a rescue park), I appreciated HUGELY the author's actual KNOWLEDGE of how these cats behave, sound, and act. Thank you, Ms. Hunter, for having done the kind of homework most fantasy writers think they're above doing!
The is the first vampire book I've read, which really even attempts to bring the genre into the 21st century. Once "out of the closet," OF COURSE they and their blood-slaves would have to deal with modern technology, legalities and law enforcement; and likewise, the government would have to sit up and take notice, and try to make laws (and profit?) from this startling new/old development. This author touches on those issues.
I haven't enjoyed a series start this much, since the first "Dresden Files" book (see Jim Butcher's Chicago wizard series). Even the setting, New Orleans, was magical to me; it took me back to Anne Rice's "Interview With the Vampire" -- it was THAT convincing. I couldn't put it down. I'm about to move on to the second book -- hoping the story continues in this vein (you should forgive the expression), and at this elevated level.
Later postscript I've now read through to the recently released book 8, "Broken Soul." I sincerely recommend ALL of these books; the whole series. I'm only sorry that the author isn't able to write them as fast as I can read them.
Thank you, Faith Hunter! I'm so glad to have "discovered" you.
I've been in the Jane Yellowrock world for a long time...from the beginning and have been obsessed with it since I first read Skinwalker years ago. I pre-order the next book into the series as soon as it is available and I own both paperbacks and kindle copies of all the books in the series. I also own kindle copies of all the shorts/short stories. If you enjoy being lost in a fully fleshed out world filled with paranormal people, you will love this book and the others that follow in the series. The additonal short stories help fill in gaps of things mentioned in passing and often answered questions that I didnt even realize that I had about Jane and the other characters in the books. Jane is a strong female character that I felt a kinship to and have become even more attached to knowing about her and her world the more I read and reread the stories created by the very talented Faith Hunter. Buy it, I do recommend the audio book as well as it does add some enhancement to the story. After many yrs I realized that I've been pronouncing so many things in this world (Jane Yellowrock's world) incorrectly. I plan to complete my collection with the audio books of the rest in the series. Beast Claws squad ) Pics show my well-loved, often reread copy and my kindle copy.
